Nissan has issued a "do not drive" advisory for certain older models following the discovery of an airbag defect associated with 58 reported injuries.

Nissan has issued a critical "do not drive" advisory to owners of over 80,000 older vehicles due to a defect in Takata airbag inflators that poses an elevated risk of injury. This warning comes after reports of one fatality and 58 injuries linked to ruptures in airbag inflators, as revealed by Dominic Vizor, Nissan's Director of Product Communications.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Vizor emphasized that this advisory represents the latest step in a comprehensive, multiyear initiative aimed at raising awareness about the hazards associated with driving vehicles equipped with faulty Takata inflators. The company urges affected drivers to promptly address the issue by scheduling a complimentary recall repair through their local Nissan dealer or Infiniti retailer.

The "do not drive" warning applies to specific models and production years, including the 2002-2006 Nissan Sentra, 2002-2004 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4, totaling 83,920 vehicles. Owners of these vehicles are strongly advised to cease driving them immediately and take advantage of the free repair services offered by Nissan. To facilitate this process, the company will provide free towing services, mobile repair options, or loaner vehicles at selected locations.

"Nissan Group urges drivers to refrain from operating affected vehicles until the necessary repair has been conducted," Vizor stated.
